{INTERVIEW} 130605 K-WAVE Magazine Vol. 09 Interview with uBEAT
By : TeacherDelThis interview was very hard to type up since the font on the image was incredibly tiny. There may be small discrepancies from the original interview.
A New Weapon, uBEAT
The group U-KISS has drawn a lot of attention from their hit songs "Manmanhani (Am I That easy?)", "NEVERLAND" and "DORADORA (Spin, spin)" since their debut in 2008. Now they've joined the competitive world of unit groups. uBEAT consists of U-KISS members AJ, Eli and Kevin. AJ and Eli, who are in charge of the rap collaborated with Kevin to come out with their new hip-hop album "Should Have Treated You Better". Hip-hop unit albums are rare for idol groups. Already having had a previous encounter with U-KISS, Kwave is obviously curious about this name. This is the story of uBEAT beyond U-KISS.
Two-year Project
Kwave: Why does this unit group consists of these three members?
Eli: AJ kept on suggestion it to our agency. Since AJ and I are rappers, we wanted to do hip-hop. We told them that we want to do music with our color. That was two years ago.
AJ: Technically, Kevin is not a member of uBEAT. He does featuring. If it's only the two of us, we thought the songs would be boring. Because Kevin's sentimental voice would really go well with our songs, he joined us. It's good, because his voice suits the song so well.
Kwave: Since there are so many unit groups already, I thought it was kind of late for you. But there is a hidden story behind it. So have you been preparing for two years right?
Eli: We are a lot late. During the past 2 years we had also been working as U-KISS, we practiced when we would. Because we prepared so much, when the chance came, we could make it right away.
AJ: To be honest, we were a bit nervous as well. If we put it off for two years, we worried that we might never be able to make an album. Now that it is out, it's a relief. We put more focus on the fact that we are doing what we've wanted to do.
Kwave: I guess you like uBEAT better than U-KISS, since you get to do what you always wanted to do?
Eli: Yeah, U-KISS songs are more seriously and manly, but uBEAT has more light and fast songs, so it is more fun.
Kevin: I personally like uBEAT better. We do songs that are easy to listen and sing to.
AJ: For U-KISS, we had to do a seven member choreography. We have a lot of choreography where we all have to be a certain angle. It's of course awesome and cool. but it is limited and not too exciting for us on stage. Since we don't do that in uBEAT we can enjoy being on stage a bit more. We can perform without any limitations.
So Ambitious
Kwave: You reunited with hit song producers Brave Brothers, how do you feel about that?
AJ: We didn't really feel anything foreign at all. They have created U-KISS's concept and musical color.
Certainly, compared to U-KISS's songs, these songs are faster and lighter. These songs sound a bit different from Brave Brothers's previously produced songs.
AJ: It was really noticeable. In fact, when you listen to Brave Brothers's other songs, you can tell who they are from. 'Ah this song is definitely made by Brave Brothers'. I think they tried a slightly thing this time.
Kwave: The song's are neither too fast nor too slow, so they are easy to listen to. I heard that one of the songs in this album, "Standing Still (Remix)" is a progressive house song. What is this unfamiliar genre of music?
Eli: Actually, it was the first time we'd heard of it too. (laughs)
AJ: Yes, it's a genre that isn't very popular in Korea yet. This might be its debut in Korea. It was remixed by the song writer, Kim Hyunsong, whowrote the title song for U-KISS's 3rd regular album. This song has a moderate tempo so that it would be more public-friendly. I think it's a song that our concept really goes well with.
Kwave: Your title song is the same as the album title, "Should Have Treated You Better". Have you ever had any regrets like the regrets in the song lyrics?
AJ: I guess everyone goes through that. (laughs) We hope our fans will listen to it thinking "this is my song". It doesn't have to be a love story.
Kevin: Well, more than regret, i just feel bad that I don't go to school regularly. I didn't get to see my friends either.
Eli: I wish I had practised the piano harder when I was young . When I was young I just didn't like it because my mother made me play it, but now that I have become a singer, I kind of regret it.
AJ: I feel a little sorry about the songs I wrote. In our previous album, there was a song called "Amazing". I actually started writing songs seriously when I composed that one. At that time, I was new to composing so I didn't really think of it as title song material. Now that time has gone by, I sometimes think that I should have asked to have it made the title song.
Since you also compose songs, will the next uBEAT album have your songs as well?
AJ: Actually, I was thinking of making songs for our first album too. However since it was our first time, we decided that it was better to do it with a professional producer. So we worked with Brave Brothers, and the songs are great too. If we get the chance to make another album, I really want to put my songs in it.
So what is your goal?
AJ: We want to have it all: do the music we want to do and gain popularity. Of course it won't be easy, but we can't just waste this opportunity which has come after two years of waiting.

{INTERVIEW} 130601 AJ to Return to Columbia University for Spring Semester 2014
By : TeacherDel
"Catching two rabbits", the ones who want to do it all.
Some people choose the path of an idol career while others choose the life of student, however there are the few who chooses instead to say a "temporary goodbye" to be able to pursue both. Even after attending school, they have the possibility of returning to their team. Instead of being omitted from their team, they are do both their entertainment activities and studies.
Last time we announced that U-KISS's AJ will be continue with his idol activities even as he attends the Ivy League school, Columbia University. Since then he has attended one semester and from February he also participated in U-KISS's album release and sub-unit (uBEAT) activities. However next Spring semester, he will be back as a psychology student. AJ stated, "I don't want to give up my studies because of U-KISS activities. I'm getting ready to achieve an A next semester, so I'm using all my free time to read".
AJ's year has been busy.
For half of a year he would stand on stage as a performer, and the other half he would return to be a regular student.
Even while performing his idol group activities, AJ was able to be accepted by the Ivy League Columbia University. AJ's determination to study all night despite his other commitments has been truly admirable to fans.
Many idols have been forced to "choose and focus" when it comes to their studies. Many have departed from their group for this very reason. Usually idols who pursue studying focus on majors that would help with their current career as an entertainer, however AJ has taken a completely different path and is majoring in Psychology.
<Sports Chosun> met with AJ and his heavy backpack. We asked him about his life during his semester at Columbia University and how this affected his activities. We will also reveal, in our interview with AJ, how he feels about returning to his campus life while continuing with group activities.
"When I went to school, I only studied. When I debuted with PARAN, I was 15 years-old and I had to drop out of school. I had no chance to be a student and I always thought it was such a pity. I know that in life people are always learning and being an entertainer has a lot to give that others who study don't experience. My ambition to study came when I heard someone say, "If you go to school you will know of everything, but if you don't you would have missed out"."
It isn't easy to transition from the stage to school. Even more burden is placed upon his shoulders as he is attending the highly prestigious Columbia University. But even so, when AJ speaks about his school life his eyes light up. Last semester, he made the bold move to shave his head and had a fulfilling and fun campus life.
"I really wanted to focus on my studies only, so I shaved my head and went off to do that. While I was there, no one recognised me as a Korean idol. No one was able to recognise me. But it was a relief. In my life I was able to truly experience the life of a student. I was able to study with my friends in the library with the right mindset and eat late-night snacks together."
Last semester, his goal was a score of 4.3 but he had achieved 3.7. He also began his U-KISS activities immediately after his semester ended. We pondered as to why AJ decided to push himself so far, mentally and physically, to do both his idol activities and studies at the time. His answer was not meant for today, but tomorrow (the future).
"No one can be an idol forever. Being idol isn't a life job. When I am 30 years-old I would like to work at an office. I don't want to settle in one place. Being a singer is great, but I want to produce albums, distribute music, work with marketing...there's a lot I want to do."
AJ was only able to be given this opportunity to study and work at the same time because of his company. So he wasn't forced to choose between departing the group and his studies but was given a 'win-win' situation.
"I made sure to tell my company that the possibility of studying was absolutely not to be omitted from my contract. (smile) My company has provided a lot of support with my condition to attend school no matter what. My fellow members also have given positive support to me. We all have the desire to study, Kevin would like to study as well".
AJ will be returning to school next Spring semester. He has already determined his goals for the next semester too.
"I don't know if it's just America, but everyone is very big and muscular and everyone is able to stay up two nights continuously without any trouble. I don't want to fall behind on strength, so during my activities I am exercising to build up my strength. I want to read novels and study with friends, get in touch with my seniors and study with them. Next semester, I also want to try being a campus couple. Of course, it has to be a friend with a good heart. (smile) Ah, also I want to receive an A next semester."
Hearing that AJ, from his studies to his idol activities, hasn't wasted any effort, his mother is extremely proud of his son.
"I can never forever the burst of happiness I felt when I first received my acceptance letter from Columbia University. I was very worried as English is not my first language but Lena Park sunbaenim, who also attended Columbia University, gave me a lot of strength with her words, "First go and experience". I was scared at first, but I had go regrets after doing my best. I want to be able to reach all my goals."

{INTERVIEW} 130509 U-KISS's Hoon, "Fans Get Upset Over Kiss Scene"
By : TeacherDel
Hoon, who is part of U-KISS's 'vocal line', takes on another challenge of being cast in the musical <When A Man Loves>. Other group members SooHyun and Kevin have already undertaken musical experience with <Summer Snow>. Hoon, along with two others, Hong KyungMin and Brian play the role of 'EunSoo' to tell the story of a first love.
"I've always had a great interest in musicals. It began when I attended theatre school. Because U-KISS's busy schedule I haven't had a chance to do musicals. But since our first unit group 'uBEAT' has been released, I've had the opportunity. (Smile) I'm a vocalist but I had no plans. So I asked my company "Isn't there something I can do?" and soon an opportunity came along."
Sunbae Hong KyungMin worked with Hoon's practices. Throughout all his practices, he remained behind Hoon to give him advice. Hoon said, "At first when I arrived to practice I was very overwhelmed by my senior co-stars, but KyungMin Sunbae is extremely nice and helpful" and "Sunbae gave me the recordings of his performances and I worked hard to study with them".
When appearing on music programs as a group, you are together on stage only. However a musical is different. From being on the stage for two hours, and the start of practice until the end, you are always with your fellow co-stars and staff members. "We always come together for dinner and get to know each other," Hoon said. "As I joined late, I thought I would be disliked but everyone was so welcoming towards me", "Especially the time given to me by the ensemble", he continued.
"Full lips are perfect for a kiss scene"

"Full lips are perfect for a kiss scene"

Hoon thinks that as EunSoo doesn't know women well, it makes him a very innocent character. "The creation of the original character is very important," he continued, "EunSoo is very similar to me. Not knowing women very well is a very big factor. He is shy in front of the woman he likes and is constantly teased as well. I am able to empathise with that very well".
Within the production there is a kiss scene with the character HaYoon, played by Brown Eyed Girls's Narsha and LPG's Han SuYeon. Hoon said and laughed, "Everyone who plays HaYoon is older than me. Even though the kiss scene is short, I am happy to perform the scene with them," and "Because my lips are full, they are great for a kiss scene," and "With excitement and an innocent heart, I am able to do the scene well".
"I let my fans know via social networking sites about the kiss scene and they replied with, "Why are you cheating. Stop. If you do that, I won't come to watch!". Although I'm an innocent man, it seems I have become a bit of a bad boy. (Smile) I left a cute message saying "If you come to watch me, come with an open-mind". The acting of the scene comes naturally as I think about going out with a girlfriend and holding her hand to make lovely memories. This is how I get into the moment of the scene".
"I want to perform with and receive the guidance from Eom KiJoon Sunbae"

This is just the starting step for Hoon. After watching Eom KiJoon's <Sorrows of Young Werther>, he said, "I would love to work with Eom KiJoon sunbae and also receive his guidance". In addition, Hoon will also be participating in the production of <Goong> the musical in Japan. Hoon will be performing with fellow member KiSeop in July in Osaka, Japan.
Amongst idol groups, Hoon said that he would like to work with Girls' Generation's SeoHyun. Hoon had attended the same classes and practiced with SeoHyun. Hoon said, "I know that SeoHyun hasn't done a musical yet" and "Even though we haven't performed together on stage yet, it seems like the results would be good if we stood on the same stage to perform".

In other news, U-KISS will be embarking on a five-city tour in Japan. The production cost for the ZEPP Tour is 50 billion won and will have over 60,000 spectators. "As my schedule finishes at a late time, members gather to wait for me to practice together," he said, "I want to also show a great stage for the ZEPP Tour". Hoon's musical <When A Man Loves> will run until June 2 at Seoul's Universal Art Center.

{NEWS} U-KISS's Eli Reveals, "First Time KiSeop Buys Meal for Members in 6 Years"
By : TeacherDel
Idol group U-KISS's KiSeop's stingy personality has been revealed.
On Y-STAR's 'ShikShin Road', to be broadcasted on April 20, featuring Eli and KiSeop reveal a long-kept secret.
In this broadcast, it is revealed by Eli that KiSeop closely checks the prices of the menu at every time to see if he is overcharged. A special meal story with U-KISS was told, "That one time (he paid) for U-KISS's meal wasn't a joke. We could only eat it if it was cheap enough".
Eli commented on KiSeop's personality, "Out of all the members, KiSeop is the most stingy. During the past six years, he has only bought us a meal once", "Until now he still carries the receipts with him".
Even after that situation KiSeop hasn't change, so since then KiSeop bears the nickname "ShikDae (Food Expense) KiSeop'.

[Interview] 130320 U-KISS Wants to Shed the 'Idol Group With No Talent' Image
By : TeacherDel
Idol group U-KISS has released their new album after a year and six months.
For a while, their frequent activities overseas left a lot of fans in Korea a little disappointed. However, it seems that their third official album, “Collage” will quench the thirst of their Korean fans.
Their new title song, “Standing Still” experiments with a new genre in K-Pop. Emotional and lyrical, and mixed with the sounds of the acoustic guitar and the new progressive house genre, the song exudes the style of U-KISS and shows a more advanced level of K-Pop.
“When people first heard the song, they weren’t sure what kind of music it was. But through weekly performances at music shows, more people are saying that they like the song. They say that it has a kind of addictiveness the more you hear it.”
U-KISS has become even manlier on stage. Their moderate choreography and performance give off a leisurely feel, just like that of six-year idol veterans.
“Truthfully, we worried a lot because there wasn’t a lot of time to prepare. We lost a lot of sleep and practiced even harder. We’re relieved that the public is seeing us in a good way.”
“After making a comeback for a long time, we realized that there are a lot of talented and impressive idols active right now. It’s already been six years since we debuted, so with the mindset that we must do better than the people that are just starting now, we’ve been motivated to perform a lot harder on stage. We want to show a more laid-back side of us through all the experience we got from our activities overseas.”

With their overseas activities beyond Asia, covering a wide breadth from Europe to South America, it’s been very hard to see U-KISS in Korea. Therefore, to leave Korean fans disappointed no more, U-KISS will remain in Korea for three months, where they plan to have frequent meetings with their fans.
“With an apologetic heart towards our Korean fans, we are planning to give our all this time. We are trying to do a lot of fan service.”
U-KISS has only one thing in mind that they want to gain from their current activities. They want to break the idea that “U-KISS is an idol group that has no talent” that the public seems to have.
“We composed our own songs and worked very hard on our album, but I think there a lot of people who judge us even before listening to our music. We want to be known as a group that’s increasingly improving. Our new album is full of songs that show off the musical skills of U-KISS, so we hope that a lot of people listen to it.”

[INTERVIEW] 130312 U-KISS Comeback Interview: "Sorry For Many Overseas Activities & Sub-Unit Plans"
By : TeacherDel
Idol group U-KISS has made their comeback after a year and a half. All the members have reached adult age in their twenties, including their youngest member, Dongho. Saying that they can now show off their sexy appeal “without worry,” U-KISS recently shared their thoughts and excitement for their comeback.
On March 7th, U-KISS released their third official album, “Collage.” Their title song, “Standing Still,” experiments with the sounds of progressive house, a rare thing in today's Korean music scene. The song expresses the honest feelings towards a lover, and highlights the members’ wave dance that flows like water, their powerful but sexy choreography.
“I just turned 20 this past year. (Claps) This means that the range of performances that we can show has become wider. Haha. This time, our album, like its name “Collage,” is full of various colorful aspects. There are fun songs, emotional ballad songs, and even cool songs, all into one album. The music is very unique, so it won’t be boring to listen to for a long time.” - Dongho
As long as U-KISS’s hiatus was, their skills, such as their vocal and performance talent, improved as much. Instead of a dynamic choreography, repressed hand moves express the main feeling of the song. The point is when the shoulders and feet move alternately, a come-and-go kind of dance.
“I really wanted to perform in front of our fans. It’s been a long time since we last stood on stage, but seeing them enjoy watching us sing made me very happy. Truthfully, I’m worried that we might not be able to perform above their expectations.” - Soohyun
It has already been six years since they debuted. Now, rather than as rookies, they are referred to as part of the main group of idols. Having “survived” in the Korean music industry, they’ve naturally come to take more of an interest in the people that are willing to listen to their music, instead of how they rank on music charts.
“Now, instead of rankings, I feel happiness in finding out that a lot of people like our music. Along with our fans (Kiss Me), I want us to reach other people, even those that didn’t know of U-KISS before. I want to hear that we are a talented group of idols who make good music.” - Kiseop
With a lot of activities overseas in Japan, China, and South America, Korean fans of U-KISS have felt a little disappointed. However, there’s good news. For the next three months, after promoting as a whole group, U-KISS seems to have plans to meet their fans as a unit group. It is still in discussions, but the members’ intentions are stronger than ever.
"I think we might promote as a unit group this year. I can’t tell you this officially, but... (Laughs) There are a few members that are doing a musical this year, and some members that are practicing acting, so this might be a possibility. We had a lot of activities overseas, but so many fans waited for us and supported us. I’m so thankful to them that I can’t even express it. This time, we will promote (in Korea) for a long three months, so much that you might even get tired of us. I hope to make a lot of good memories with (our fans).” - Soohyun
